Why Medlab Clinical?

We’re facing an epidemic of chronic disease unlike any other. It’s a slow-motion plague that is sabotaging our quality and quantity of life, shortening our lifespan, bankrupting our governments, and threatening the health of our future generations.

As an RN myself, I notice that our health care system is based on treating the symptoms and individual organs, as opposed to treating the root cause and the body as a whole.

At Medlab Clinical the focus is on understanding the impact of chronic disease and addressing the problem where it often starts: the gut.

Today on the blog I am interviewing Dr Sean Hall, Researcher, Doctor, Healthcare leader, Innovator and Medical Policy Advocate at Medlab Clinical. This company is revolutionising the health care system and has become a crucial tool in my kit when assisting my patients skin and digestive health.


Madilyn: Medlab Clinical have researched the links between gut microbiome and multiple chronic

diseases. Can you give us a brief overview of why you believe gut health is so important?

Dr Sean: Firstly, it’s worth stating the obvious, the gut is a receptor rich environment, secondly the 21 st century has led to significant dietary and lifestyle changes. The question, what food is, let alone what healthy food consumption is becoming harder to answer. Your mum probably re-enforced, “you are what you eat” whilst simplistic, we have redefined this statement to be more “therapeutic” – “you are what you absorb”. So, if you eat crap food, you absorb… I think you get my point.

But the not-so-obvious reality is we trust foods, and maybe too much, we believe in marketers and again maybe too much; we are witnessing too many foods that have been adulterated (in one way or another) and thus even supposedly “good” food choices we have made, have now been questioned.


Beyond this we have the advent of chronic illnesses, something we were not prepared for (see Screenshot below). Chronic illnesses are directly or indirectly linked to pro anti-inflammatory cytokines, so it makes sense, heal the gut because of our lifestyle, shut down inflammatory cycle and then we get a better chance at combating chronic illnesses.

In medicine we understand the gut to be the primary organ that has a direct effect on other organ functions, liver, kidneys, immune, nervous system, and neuro. So why is gut health so important – if left unchecked, the potential for secondary organ dysfunction, a chronic illness, an unregulated inflammatory or immune cycle can become all too real.

Madilyn: Why is Medlab different to products we can buy off the shelves at the local shops?

Dr Sean: Great question, simply put it’s the science, we undertake various pre-clinical and clinical trials, all our human work is Ethics approved and cited according on Gov’t databases, we are a public company so we are compelled to report truthfully and we have some 27 patents.

We are focused on chronic illnesses, we lecture, we publish, in fact we are very transparent. This is unique when comparing to others in the marketplace – our science is ours, not intonated or surrogated in part from someone else’s work. We don’t pretend to be something for everyone, but we do state we know our products, and how it would fit with a certain patient.

Madilyn: I am often asked by my clients if the hype around Probiotics for our health are real? I feel you are best to answer this question:

Definitely, but we need to move past the simpleton approach of generic (general) formulations that base beneficial effect against the amount of strains and/or CFU in one dose. More is not always better. A few years back we undertook research in collaboration with USYD that took its underlining principles from the US driven Human Microbiome Project (See – A1 Poster ADAM) the data showed certain bacterium where indicated for certain illnesses – NOT 1 is indicated FOR EVERYTHING. What we didn’t give away was the ratio needs to illicit said health outcome – but this has fundamentally driven our research and that’s why you see products (many patented) from us that are explicit re the use. Further this is where a health practitioner – such as yourself can truly add value to the patient in their road to recovery. When it comes to probiotics, I offer the following – it’s still an emerging field and as research expands so do the clinical implications, so when confronted with a choice of brand A or brand B – forget the following:

  • Heat stable – as it generally means the brand has put a significant amount more bacterium into the product to meet label claim – net result, you don’t always know how much you are taking

  • Price – good, pure, clean, stable probiotics are not cheap

  • The CFU amount – unless you have been told you need a specific strength

Look for the clinical science, and this should be transparent on 3 rd party websites.

Examples of research undertaken from us include:

1. Probiotic formulation for treatment (SSRI) resistant depression, actually large human trials

are happening now at QUT in Brisbane

2. Probiotic formulation for pre-diabetic and T2DM, collaboration with USYD, Boden institute

3. Probiotic formulation for Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

4. Probiotic formulation for Mesothelioma (not at human trials yet)

The important point here is these are ALL different probiotic formulations.

Madilyn: How do you know which probiotic to take? There seems to be alot of them on the

market!

I think I have covered this in the above question. The takeaways are, irrespective of someone self-prescribing or under medical advice:

1. Look before you leap – understand the product on the market and the company behind it

2. Price should be a ruling factor – cheap doesn’t equal premium or research product

3. Seek professional advice – let them help you specifically target outcomes, as it may save you

heaps of time and money in the long run.

Madilyn: How much of a role do you feel food plays in our health, and can Medlab nutraceuticals

still assist if you have a poor diet?

Dr Sean: Food, food consumption is significant and potentially a huge topic unto itself. Nevertheless, the right food choices are very important, I question where we can make the right food choices – I openly advocate people to seek professional help in this regard, and actively research the topic…. God knows I am still learning and don’t always make the right choice.

Furthermore, I believe in balance, People can’t be expected to be religious 24/7. But again, this is where a professional can help. So, let’s assume you have a perfect diet, I known a utopian position, but for the purpose of the example, pretend. To get the most from this perfect diet, you would need a perfectly functioning gut– I mean you must absorb it, right. So, in reality, we know neither are going to be the case, and for most of us, lets face it both our food and gut will be sub-optimal. This is a good area where nutritional invention can help, from fatigue, mental dullness, lactic acidosis, restless sleep, bowel movements, immune suppression, generally run down, feeling stressed – all can be addressed by better nutrition, and because our diet is lacking or our gut is not absorbing as well as it should, supplementing is a good idea.

Beyond this we move into a more therapeutic space, an area we at Medlab understand all too well –this is where we are addressing a specific health concern and plan to restore positive health outcomes in the patient.

Personally, I think everyone should take a probiotic daily, for me, I also add our Magnesium product and our Stemguard product – for me long days, extensive travel, fitness routine and balancing work, family and social life are critical – I feel these 2 products give me the “pepp” to charge through my day.

Madilyn: What is one product everyone should be on from Medlab?

Easy MultiBiotic, a great robust probiotic, patented, researched and in use for a wide range of

conditions – but not everything. So, if I was unsure, if I don’t have professional advice, I would select it.

I want to caveat this by advocating the need for professional help or guidance.

Know your sh*t!

OK, let's just cut the crap right here (See what I did there?). Poo is no longer a taboo topic and something you will just have to get use to me talking about! It is an important part of your skin and overall health, I promise! You all know now from reading my blogs, that our gut is our second brain and that 80% of our immune system is in our gut, etc etc. Well our poo (which if you didn't already know, starts in our gut) can reveal A LOT of information about our health.

It can tell us a lot about the balance of bacteria in our gut, how well we’re absorbing nutrients, and whether our body is detoxifying toxins properly. Our daily intake of food is typically three to four meals a day for most. Our body will absorb what it needs from those meals and then excrete the rest. (2)Our bodies way of doing this is via having daily bowel motions. Yes, daily! I cringe if I ask my patients/ clients how often they move their bowels and they respond with anything less than once a day. When the gut is functioning normally, you should expect to have a bowel movement at least once a day, and up to three times in a day can be normal for most.

So, you might be thinking, well aren't you a skin and gut specialist so why are you talking about poo? Well remember, your skin is our largest organ and a major form of elimination for the body. If you aren't moving your bowels regularly then the toxins will try to excrete elsewhere. The face is covered in pores just waiting to excrete toxins in the form of lovely pustules! Now, for the women reading, this is the most important information you need to take from my blog! You MUST have regular bowel motions to ensure your body does not store toxic hormones. Our bodies produce hormones, and the liver is responsible for processing and inactivating them. Our hormones go through a process of deactivation to be moved out of the body via the gut. If our bowel motions are not regular, the hormones can hang around a little too long in the gut causing an overload. Our gut then produces an enzyme called "beta-glucuronidase" which causes our body to recycle the toxic hormone. For women, this means disruptions to our bodies rhythm, causing issues such as irregular menstrual cycles, purges of acne, mood disorders such as depression and anxiety and also thyroid disorders. Not to mention increase risk of hormonally derived cancers like breast and ovarian cancers.(1)

I recently assisted my best friend through a terrible health  ordeal which started with prolonged constipation. This constipation had been getting progressively worse over three months. Every specialist she saw, prescribed her laxatives of some form or informed her that her future would require a colostomy bag as her bowels were no longer working sufficiently. This was her experience with the conventional medical approach (not to say everyone's experience is like this). No answer as to why at the age of 25, young and fit, her bowels had just stopped working, but instead, a whole list of terrifying interventions. My friend decided to take her health into her own hands and started watching very carefully what she was putting into her body and how her body was reacting. After some time and a lot of research, she had found that a certain preservative that was in her protein powder and a couple of other daily regular packaged foods, was causing the issue. Since cleaning up her diet and eliminating this preservative, her bowel motions have become a lot more regular without the use of laxatives and she has learnt to read her stools and link them to her her food intake. She found her root cause and focused on this which in turn eased the symptoms, instead of treating a symptom which would not fix her root cause (in fact it would have made it worse long term!). And to think, just a few months ago we were bracing ourselves for the life altering procedure of a colostomy bag!!!!

Knowing your own body and how it works, is so empowering. We pay hundreds of dollars for maintenance services on our cars, yet think its too expensive for testing and professional guidance when it comes to our bodies?We know the ins and outs of how our computers and iphones work, but so many of us have no idea how our body is meant to function. We seem to think that that's just the Doctors job. We didn't study medicine, so what would we know? For me that's just not good enough, the health of myself and my loved ones, is the most important thing in the world. I sure as hell don't want to leave that up to a 5 minute consult with a random Doctor once or twice a year. Know your body, know what the root cause of your health concern is. If you don't get the answer from one Doctor, see a Naturopath or a Functional treating Doctor. If they don't find the answer, go to ten more! Research yourself! There is a root cause for all of your health concerns, but the biggest problem of all is not knowing you need to find it. Don't be that patient who is on ten different medications all counteracting each other and treating the symptoms not the cause.
